south of croydon raised christian sibthorpe (aka a1 bassline) sent over a few things over the last 12 months that really had me paying attention. but it was jessica (j. phlip) ended up being the first one to drop falsehood at the spring dirtybird party in sf which pretty much sealed the deal. it just smashed the room to bits. later on i met christian in person when he helped me do a live radio show at rinse fm in london along with ben westbeech and we agreed there that dirtybird would put these two tracks out.a1 claims to have been heavily influenced by early metalheadz and you can really here it on these tunes. while buoyancy is a smooth pulsing affair that really shines in the deeper mixes, falsehood (which we are re-releasing from a1s tighten up label) really buries the hatched in your brain with bits and pieces of 808s, breaks and house hi-hats all forged together like hot iron.

out of an 8.8 earthquake, riots and severe illness comes one of the most joyful records of the year. brian gibbs aka echo park has had a colourful life to say the least, living and making music in l.a., tokyo, madrid, mexico city and now santiago, chile where he lives with his young family. previously a producer of dark hip hop and dub, a series of disasters made him confront mortality and decide it was time to make the music that is closest to his heart: luscious, sunshine-infused electro-funk full of laid back attitude and real songs. skream has always been a lover of disco, boogie and electro � as anyone who has heard one of his specialist sets or his slick n sleazy remix of chromeo will know. it took just one hearing of brians first echo park tracks via a mutual friend to snap them up for disfigured dubz. in fact he has chosen echo park for the first full album on the label� but first comes this killer single, a shmoooove bit of vocoder funk that sets the tone for echo parks twin obsessions with technology and romance. bundled with it are a gutbusting ravemonster of a rework by 12th planet & flinch that somehow still keeps the soul of the track intact, and jon convex taking it way underground with a deeper-than-deep analogue techno version. there is something for everyone here and this is just the beginning.

the proposition is a simple one. it was a 2009 when julio bashmore first remixed >heartbreaker< from deadboys classic first release - the >u cheated< ep on well rounded.
he remoulded the garage template of the original into something more immediate, replacing the swung off-beats of the original with driving forward-rhythms and a clarity of purpose that takes absolutely nothing away from the musical impact of the original. this circulated on mp3 and we smiled and danced.
unexpectedly, in 2010 jb returned to >heartbreaker< for a different interpretation. this time around a more haunting approach was the order of the day with cross-fading strings creating a soulful, otherworldly atmosphere. the drop this time also swapped sub bass for punchy 808s. a tantalising further alternative that pointed the way to this vinyl release.
back 2 back timeless brilliance for the dancefloor on our favourite format. get stuck in.

recorded in the immediate aftermath of his last ep >passed me by<, this new doublepack from andy stott features six new productions that are more desolate and exposed than anything on its predecessor. the opening >submission< tumbles into being with layers of washed-out digital revolutions, creating an artificial landscape thats quite at odds with the analogue machinations that follow - yet somehow rendering the alienated feel of this material perfectly. >posers< nudges its way into being abruptly and embeds another squashed funk variant thas all low-lit neon and growling textures, awkwardly shuffling into a more robust 4/4 template suffused with sparkling percussion and disembodied vocals. >bad wires< is the centrepiece of the ep, a relentless percussive cluster*ck that belies its slow tempo with a fearless rhythmic attitude. its as immersive and narcotic as anything ever produced by stott - peeling away one layer after another with each repeated listen. >we stay together< (part one) was the first track written for the ep and offers a more spacious narrative and a more sparkling, hazy palette - culminating in a beautifully frayed central hook thats somehow in keeping with the vhs aesthetic of both jamal moss and ferris bueller. >cherry eye< tumbles deep into a darkened hole before ep closer >cracked< turns up, fuelled by an odd mixture of adrenalin and sorrow to send you on your way.... buzzing and forlorn
